Pool filters
Sand filters push water through a bed of media that traps debris, and you clean them by backwashing rather than rinsing a cartridge. They are the low-touch option and handle larger volumes well.
Water flows down through graded sand that captures particles, then returns to the pool. To clean it you reverse the flow to backwash, flushing trapped debris out to waste. The sand itself lasts several seasons before it needs changing.
Sand needs attention less often than cartridge, which suits larger pools and owners who would rather backwash occasionally than rinse a cartridge every week. It filters slightly less fine than cartridge or DE, but for most pools that difference is invisible once chemistry and circulation are right.
Backwash when pressure rises 8 to 10 psi over baseline. Run it until the sight glass runs clear, then rinse briefly before returning to filter. Backwashing uses water, so check local rules on where that water can go. Replace the sand every few seasons as its edges wear smooth and filtration falls off.
