Why Your Pool Pump Loses Prime

Losing prime almost always means the pump is pulling air through the suction side. The water column that the pump needs to work with is being broken somewhere between the skimmer and the pump itself. The sequence below moves from the free and obvious checks to the less obvious ones.

Start here: water level and lid

Before any other diagnosis, check two things that cost nothing and take under a minute each.

Water level. If the pool water has dropped to or below the skimmer mouth, the pump is pulling air through the skimmer throat. Top up first. Many prime problems disappear when the water level is restored.

Pump lid. A loose or improperly seated pump lid is the single most common cause of suction-side air entry. Remove the lid, inspect the O-ring, wipe the groove clean, apply a small amount of pool-safe silicone lubricant, and reseat the lid so it sits squarely and evenly before tightening. A lid that was seated crooked lets air in around the whole circumference.

The O-rings to check first

Most suction-side air leaks come from one of three seals. Check them in this order.

Pump lid O-ring. This is the circular rubber seal that compresses when the pump lid is tightened. When it is cracked, flattened, or dry, air can enter between the lid and the pump body. Signs of a failing pump lid O-ring include visible bubbles churning in the pump basket while the pump runs and audible air noise from the pump. Suction union O-ring. The union fittings on the suction pipe carry a small internal O-ring. A loose or degraded union O-ring lets air in on the low-pressure side of the pump without necessarily dripping water, because the pump vacuum holds the joint dry even while pulling air through it. Inspect each union between the skimmer and the pump by feel and by listening for air hiss with the pump running.

Skimmer basket seal. On some configurations, the fitting where the suction line connects at the skimmer can develop a slow leak. Inspect this connection if the lid and union O-rings check out.

Drain-back: why the pump loses prime after sitting

When a pump loses prime slowly, over hours rather than immediately, the usual cause is drain-back: water draining out of the suction pipe back toward the pool through a leak or an open joint. The pump starts against an air-filled pipe and has to pull the water column back up before it can prime.

Drain-back is different from a direct air leak during operation. The two have a different pattern:

  • Active air leak during operation: bubbles visible in the pump lid, pump may cavitate during a run, basket may be partially empty while the pump is on.
  • Drain-back: basket empties quickly after shutdown, pump takes a long time to prime at startup, but once primed it runs normally.

Fixing drain-back means finding and sealing the suction-side leak that is allowing the column to drain. If a check valve is installed on the suction line and it is failing, the check valve may also be the source.

Do not replace the pump yet

A pump that will not stay primed does not automatically need replacing. Before drawing that conclusion, confirm:

  • The pump lid O-ring has been inspected and replaced if in doubt
  • All suction-side unions are tight and their O-rings are in good condition
  • The water level is correct
  • Both baskets are empty
  • The impeller is clear of debris
  • The suction plumbing has no cracks or loose joints

A pump with a confirmed mechanical seal failure, cracked housing, or a motor problem is a different situation. But those are not the first thing to suspect when a pump loses prime.

When the pump itself may be the problem

After the suction side has been checked and sealed, a pump that still will not hold prime or shows weak flow despite correct water level and clean baskets may have an internal issue.

Worn mechanical seal. The shaft seal inside the pump prevents water from leaking along the motor shaft. A failing shaft seal can allow air entry from an unexpected path. This usually presents as water dripping from the back of the pump body near the motor, not from the suction side.

Cracked pump housing. A physical crack in the pump body creates a direct air entry point that is independent of the O-rings and unions. Inspect the pump body for cracks if suction-side inspection finds nothing.

Impeller obstruction. A pump impeller packed with debris reduces flow severely. The pump may prime but fail to hold it, or flow may be too weak to maintain circulation. Clearing the impeller often restores normal operation without any seal work.

If all suction-side causes have been ruled out and the pump still fails, it is worth having the mechanical seal and pump condition assessed before investing in a replacement pump.

What you are seeing

The pump basket empties of water, the pump runs loud or cavitates, and flow drops or stops. You may see air bubbles churning under the pump lid or small bubbles streaming from the pool returns.

Possible causes

  • Air leak on the suction side A loose lid, a worn pump lid O-ring, or a leaking union lets air in on the low-pressure side of the pump and breaks the water column.
  • Low pool water level If water drops below the skimmer mouth, the pump pulls air directly instead of water. This is the first thing to check and costs nothing to fix.
  • Clogged skimmer basket or pump basket A full basket starves the pump. Enough restriction and it cannot hold prime even if the suction side is airtight.
  • Drain-back on the suction side A crack, loose fitting, or missing check valve on the suction plumbing lets the water column drain back after shutdown. The pump then starts against an air-filled pipe.
  • Clogged or fouled impeller A pump impeller packed with debris reduces flow to the point where the pump cannot hold prime, even though it is running.

Diagnose it by symptom

Match what you see to the row below, then go straight to the action. This narrows the cause faster than checking everything in order.

  1. If you see Bubbles churning under the pump lid while the pump runs

  3. If you see Prime is lost only after the system sits overnight, not immediately after shutdown
    It points to A slow suction-side leak is allowing gradual drain-back. May also be a failing check valve if one is fitted.
    Do this Replace the pump lid O-ring. Inspect the suction unions by feel and look for any moisture around fittings overnight.
  4. If you see Prime disappeared right after you cleaned the filter or opened the pump
    It points to Air was introduced during service and the lid is not reseated correctly
    Do this Refill the pump pot with water, reseat the lid squarely so the O-ring is fully seated all the way around, and re-prime.
  5. If you see Water level is at or below the skimmer mouth
    It points to The pump is pulling air instead of water through the skimmer
    Do this Top up pool water to the middle of the skimmer before any other diagnosis. Check prime after the level is correct.
  6. If you see Pump primes fine but loses prime after 10 to 30 minutes of running
    It points to Points to a suction restriction (basket, impeller) or a marginal seal that fails under sustained vacuum
    Do this Empty both baskets and check the impeller for debris. Inspect the pump lid O-ring under operating conditions by listening for air noise at the lid.

How to check

  1. Confirm pool water is above the middle of the skimmer mouth before anything else.
  2. Inspect the pump lid O-ring. Remove the lid, wipe the O-ring groove clean, check the O-ring for cracks or deformation, lubricate with silicone lubricant, and reseat the lid squarely.
  3. With the pump running, look for bubbles in the pump basket. Bubbles point to a suction-side air leak.
  4. Check and empty the skimmer basket and pump basket.
  5. Inspect the suction-side unions between the skimmer and the pump for tightness and dripping.
  6. If the problem occurs only after the system has been off for hours, suspect drain-back through a suction-side leak or a failing check valve.
  7. If flow is weak even when the pump is primed, check the impeller for debris before assuming a seal issue.

How to fix it

  1. Inspect and replace the pump lid O-ring The pump lid O-ring is the most common cause of suction-side air entry. Remove the lid, inspect the O-ring for cracks, flattening, or hardening, and replace it if it shows any deformation. Lubricate the new O-ring with pool-safe silicone lubricant and seat the lid evenly before tightening. See the pool gaskets page for seal inspection guidance.
  2. Restore the water level Top up pool water so it sits at the middle of the skimmer. A level at or below the skimmer mouth means the pump is pulling air through the skimmer throat. Fix the level before any other diagnosis.
  3. Clear the baskets and check the impeller Remove and empty the skimmer basket and pump basket. If flow is weak despite a good prime, remove the pump trap and inspect the impeller for hair, debris, or buildup that can choke flow. Clear carefully.
  4. Tighten or replace suction-side unions Loose unions on the suction side let air in even without visible dripping. Hand-tighten each union between the skimmer and the pump. If a union drips or you can feel play in it, replace the O-ring inside the union before assuming you need a new fitting.
  5. Address drain-back If the pump loses prime slowly overnight and a suction-side leak is confirmed, repairing the leak usually also fixes drain-back. If a check valve is fitted and failing, it can allow the column to drain back independently. Inspect or replace the check valve if the system has one and the suction side is otherwise airtight.

How to prevent it

  • Keep pool water above the skimmer, especially during hot weather when evaporation is faster.
  • Inspect and lubricate the pump lid O-ring at the start of each season and after any lid removal.
  • Empty baskets regularly, particularly during heavy-use periods or after storms.
  • After any maintenance that requires opening the pump or disturbing the suction plumbing, refill the pump pot and check for bubbles before leaving the system running unattended.
