Pool gaskets and O-rings
Many pool leaks and some air-entry problems can be traced to worn, damaged, or improperly seated seals. Knowing which seal is which, where it sits, and what its failure looks like turns a frustrating mystery into a straightforward inspection.
Gasket versus O-ring: what is the difference?
Pool equipment uses several types of seals, and they are not interchangeable. Understanding which type is in front of you helps you order the right replacement the first time.

Where seals are found on pool equipment
The diagram below shows the common seal locations on a typical residential pool equipment pad. Each seal point has a different part type, and each can fail independently.
Spider gasket versus valve cover gasket
These two seals are often confused because both live in or around the multiport valve.
Spider gasket
The spider gasket sits inside the valve body and seals the individual flow channels from each other. It has a distinctive web shape with multiple arms, one for each port. When the spider gasket fails, water moves between positions it should not reach. The common symptom is water flowing to the waste line while the valve is set to Filter.

Valve cover gasket / tank seal
The tank seal sits at the joint between the valve body and the filter tank, on the outside of the valve assembly. It prevents water from spraying out at that connection point under pump pressure. When it fails, water leaks visibly at the valve-to-tank seam.
This seal is replaced without necessarily disassembling the valve internals, though the valve must be removed from the tank. It is sold by filter model, not valve model.
Which seal is causing the problem?
Match the symptom you see to the seal most likely to be responsible. Checking the right seal first saves time and avoids replacing parts unnecessarily.

How to tell if a seal needs replacement
A seal does not need to be visibly broken to fail. These are the conditions that mean a seal should be replaced rather than reinstalled.
A seal that looks intact but was removed from a pressurized system that was leaking should be treated as a suspect. Re-lubricate it and reinstall it carefully, then observe whether the leak stops. If it does not, the seal is the likely cause even if no visible damage is present.
A dry-looking O-ring is not automatically defective. Inspect its shape and cross-section. If it is still round, flexible, and undamaged, lubricate it with a pool-safe silicone lubricant and reinstall it before deciding to replace it.
Lubrication: why it matters and what to use
O-rings and gaskets last longer and seal better when they are kept lightly lubricated. A dry O-ring is more likely to be pinched, torn, or rolled out of its groove during installation, and more likely to develop surface cracks over time.
- Use a pool-equipment-compatible silicone lubricant. Products labeled for pool equipment or O-ring service are the appropriate choice. A thin coat on the O-ring surface is enough.
- Do not use petroleum-based lubricants. Petroleum products swell and degrade rubber O-rings and are incompatible with pool water chemistry. Vaseline and WD-40 are not substitutes.
- Clean the groove and mating surface first. Debris in the groove prevents the O-ring from seating correctly. A clean, smooth groove is as important as the O-ring itself.
- Install O-rings without twisting. An O-ring that is twisted in its groove will not seal evenly. Place it in the groove, then run a finger around it to ensure it sits flat and in contact with the groove wall all the way around.
- Inspect and lubricate at the start of each season. Opening the filter and pump for seasonal inspection is an ideal time to check every O-ring in the system and apply lubricant before any leaks develop.
How to identify the correct replacement seal
Pool seals are matched to specific equipment models. The same description (pump lid O-ring, spider gasket) can refer to parts with very different dimensions across different models and brands. Two approaches work.
By part number (preferred)
Find the model number on your pump, filter, or valve body. Look up the parts diagram on the manufacturer's website using that model number. The diagram will show a part number for each seal. Search by that number rather than by description.
This method is reliable because a part number maps to exact dimensions and materials, not just a name. Use it whenever the model number is available.
By measurement (when part number is unavailable)
For O-rings, measure the inner diameter and the cross-section (the thickness of the ring itself). Both measurements are needed because O-rings with the same inner diameter can have different cross-sections. For spider gaskets, measure the outer diameter and count the number of arms.
Measure the old part when possible. If the old part is too deformed to measure accurately, measure the groove it came from instead.
