The PowerFlo LX is Hayward's corded pump for above-ground pools. The W3SP1580X15 used to be sold as a 1.5 HP pump; Hayward now lists it at 1.1 total horsepower, and the Amazon listing explains that new DOE rules require the true operating horsepower to be published. This review is research-based: we did not test the pump. It works from Hayward's product page and owner's manual and the Amazon listing. No prices, and no star ratings or customer reviews copied across.

A simple plug-in pump for above-ground pools from a big pool brand, with a clear cover over a large basket and a drain plug for winter. It is single speed and not self-priming, so it must sit below the pool's water line. The "1.1 HP" label is the new rating of what used to be sold as 1.5 HP, not a weaker pump, according to the listing.

Is the PowerFlo LX a good fit for your pool?
Good fit if
- You have an above-ground or on-ground pool
- You are replacing an older PowerFlo LX
- Your equipment sits below the pool's water line
- You have a GFCI-protected outlet close to the pump
Look elsewhere if
- You have an in-ground pool
- Your pump would sit above the water line (look at a self-priming pump)
- You would need an extension cord to reach power
1.1 HP or 1.5 HP? The label explained
Hayward's product page lists the W3SP1580X15 at Total HP 1.1. The Amazon listing explains the change: it says new DOE efficiency rules require manufacturers to publish the true operating horsepower, and that the pump delivers the same flow and pressure as the previous models. That equivalence is the listing's claim; we could not compare Hayward performance charts for the old and new labels. Older units may be labelled SP1580X15, without the W3 prefix. Hayward rates its efficiency at WEF 3.9.
Below the water line: the rule that matters most
Hayward's manual is clear: PowerFlo LX and EP series pumps must be installed below the pool water line. They are not self-priming like Hayward's PowerFlo II, which may sit up to 4 ft above the water line. With the water source higher than the pump, the PowerFlo LX primes itself when you open the valves. Never run it dry: Hayward warns this may damage the seals and cause leaks. Losing prime anyway? why a pool pump loses prime.
Power: 115 V, GFCI, no extension cord
It plugs in with a 3 ft cord on 115 V. Hayward's manual says to connect it only to a GFCI-protected circuit, and not to use an extension cord. The voltage at the motor must stay within 10% of the nameplate voltage, or the motor may overheat and trip. So plan an outlet close to the pump before you buy (our advice). Why voltage and wiring matter: pool pump voltage, 115V vs 230V.
Winter storage
From Hayward's manual: power off, lower the water below all pool inlets, remove the drain plug at the bottom of the strainer, take the pump off its base, put the lid and plug back and store it in a dry place. Do not wrap the motor in plastic. Hayward says letting the pump freeze voids the warranty. Whole-pool steps: how to winterize a pool.
Single speed and the rules
Under DOE's 2023 rule, pool pump motors from 0.5 to under 1.15 total horsepower manufactured on or after September 28, 2027 must have variable-speed control; DOE's April 2026 policy separately delays enforcement for small-size motors manufactured from that date to before March 26, 2029. With Hayward's Total HP of 1.1, this pump is in that size group (our reading). California has its own pool pump rules (Title 20). Pentair's 2021 SuperFlo manual states that single-speed pumps and replacement motors of 1 total horsepower or more cannot be sold, offered for sale or installed in a residential pool for filtration use in California. We could not open the California Energy Commission's own pages to confirm how this applies to every pump, so if you are in California, check with your installer or seller before buying a single-speed pump (our advice). Details: are single-speed pool pumps being phased out?

The trade-offs
What we like
- Made for above-ground pools, plugs into 115 V
- Clear cover over an extra-large basket
- Drain plug for winter
- Listing says same flow and pressure as the older 1.5 HP version
Worth knowing
- Not self-priming: must sit below the water line
- Single speed: no low-speed savings
- Short 3 ft cord and no extension cord allowed
- 1 year parts warranty, no labor (Hayward)
Who should buy the PowerFlo LX?
Buy it if
- You have an above-ground pool with the pump below the water line
- You are replacing an old PowerFlo LX like for like
- You want a simple plug-in pump
Skip it if
- Your pool is in-ground
- Your pump spot is above the water line
- You are in California and need a filtration pump: check the state rule first
Consider something else if
- Pairing it with a sand filter: check the filter's maximum flow and the pump's performance chart from Hayward first
Common questions
Is the Hayward PowerFlo LX self-priming?
No. Hayward's manual says PowerFlo LX pumps must be installed below the pool water line. The PowerFlo II is the self-priming one.
Why does it say 1.1 HP instead of 1.5 HP?
Hayward now lists the W3SP1580X15 at Total HP 1.1. The listing says DOE rules require the true operating horsepower to be published, and that flow and pressure are the same as before; that last part is the listing's claim.
Can I use an extension cord?
No. Hayward's manual says not to use an extension cord, and to connect only to a GFCI-protected circuit.
Is it for in-ground pools?
No. Hayward lists it for above-ground pools.
What we could not confirm
Honest gaps. We do not state these because we could not confirm them from Hayward's documents.
- Flow in GPM (Hayward publishes a separate performance chart)
- Amp draw
- Inlet and outlet size
Our verdict
A straightforward above-ground pump from a major brand, and a straightforward choice to replace an older PowerFlo LX. Mind the two install rules (below the water line, GFCI outlet without an extension cord) and know that it is single speed. We do not give pumps a Fit Score; this verdict is based on Hayward's specifications and manual.
