The PB4-60 is the booster pump Polaris makes for its booster-model pressure cleaners, such as the Vac-Sweep 280, 380 and 3900 Sport. This review is research-based: we did not test the pump. It works from the Polaris PB4-60 installation and operation manual (Zodiac) and the Amazon listing. No prices, and no star ratings or customer reviews copied across.

Specifications: Polaris PB4-60 Pressure Cleaner Booster Pump Installation and Operation Manual (Zodiac, H0399500 Rev F) the Amazon listing for PB4-60, and Polaris's cleaner specifications (Vac-Sweep 280, 380, 360 and 3900 Sport product pages), checked October 2026.

Bottom line

The matching booster pump for Polaris booster-model pressure cleaners, with a detailed manual. It is not a stand-alone pump: it needs the filter pump running, a dedicated return line, its own GFCI-protected circuit and a timer. Do not pair it with the Polaris 360, which Polaris says will not operate properly with a booster.

Is the PB4-60 a good fit for your pool?

Good fit if

  • You have (or are buying) a Polaris booster-model pressure cleaner
  • Your pool has a dedicated cleaner return line, or you will add one
  • You can add a timer and a dedicated GFCI circuit

Look elsewhere if

  • Your cleaner is a Polaris 360, a suction cleaner or a robot
  • You have no way to add a dedicated return line
  • You want a pump that can run on its own

3/4 HP or 1.13 THP?

The Amazon listing calls it a 3/4 horsepower motor; the Polaris manual lists 1.13 THP (total horsepower). We could not confirm how the two relate. Total horsepower normally includes a motor's service factor, its built-in overload capacity, and DOE's 2012 guideline notes that pool pump motors often have large service factors; but we could not read a service factor value in the manual's rating table, so we treat the difference as unconfirmed (our explanation). For wiring and breakers, go by the manual's amps: 6.4 A at 230 V, 12.8 A at 115 V.

Plumbing: a line of its own

  • The booster needs a dedicated return line, plumbed upstream of all air-inducing equipment and as far as possible from a chlorinator.
  • Use rigid PVC of at least 3/4 in.; Polaris recommends 1-1/2 in. for the dedicated line.
  • With a heater, tap the booster inlet at least 3 ft downstream of the heater discharge.
  • Polaris recommends mounting it within about 1 ft above the water level, and not more than a few feet above it.
  • The manual says the pump needs a minimum outlet pressure of 45 psi; lower pressure may cause an over-current motor condition.

Electrical and the timer rule

It comes wired for 230 V and can be rewired for 115 V following the motor nameplate. On 115 V, Polaris recommends a 20 amp breaker because the starting current may exceed 15 amps. It needs a dedicated circuit with GFCI protection, bonding within 5 ft of the pool, and the manual says all electrical work must be done by a licensed electrician.

The rule that protects the pump: with a separate time clock, switch the booster on at least half an hour after the filter pump starts and off at least half an hour before it stops. Running it without the filter pump damages it, according to Polaris. Voltage background: pool pump voltage, 115V vs 230V.

Which cleaners it powers

Polaris's cleaner specifications list the Vac-Sweep 280, Vac-Sweep 380 and 3900 Sport as requiring a booster pump. The Vac-Sweep 360 is the exception: Polaris says it will not operate properly with a booster pump. Full list: which pool cleaners need a booster pump.

Winter

Polaris warns that letting the pump freeze causes severe damage and voids the warranty. Its steps: drain the pump, equipment and piping, remove and store the drain plug (keep the O-ring), and do not cover the pump with plastic, which traps condensation. The manual's preferred option is to have the wiring disconnected by a qualified technician or electrician, loosen the two quick connect fittings and store the pump indoors. The trade-offs

What we like

  • Made by Polaris for its booster-model cleaners
  • Detailed installation manual
  • 230 V or 115 V
  • Quick connect fittings make removal for winter easier

Worth knowing

  • Needs a dedicated return line and its own circuit
  • Must be timed around the filter pump
  • Not for the Polaris 360 or non-Polaris setups without checking
  • Single speed, low WEF (0.5)

Who should buy the PB4-60?

Buy it if

  • You own a Polaris 280, 380 or 3900 Sport
  • You are replacing an old PB4-60 like for like
  • You have or can add a dedicated cleaner line

Skip it if

  • Your cleaner is a Polaris 360, a suction cleaner or a robot
  • You want to avoid plumbing and electrical work (a robotic cleaner needs neither)

Consider something else if

  • Long wire runs to the equipment pad: Polaris's wiring table needs thicker wire on 115 V than on 230 V for runs up to 100 ft

Common questions

Is the PB4-60 self-priming?

No. It depends on the filter pump to feed it water, and Polaris warns that running it without the filtration pump damages it.

Can it run on 115 V?

Yes. It is factory wired for 230 V and can be rewired for 115 V; on 115 V Polaris recommends a 20 amp breaker.

When should the booster pump turn on?

At least half an hour after the filter pump starts, and off at least half an hour before the filter pump stops, according to Polaris.

Does it work with a Polaris 360?

No. Polaris says the 360 will not operate properly with a booster pump.

Our verdict

If you have a Polaris booster-model cleaner, this is the pump it is designed around, backed by a clear and detailed manual. Budget for the plumbing, a dedicated GFCI circuit and a timer, and never pair it with a Polaris 360. We do not give pumps a Fit Score; this verdict is based on Polaris's manual and specifications.
