Sand Filter vs Cartridge Filter: 5-Year Ownership Cost
There is no universal cheapest filter type. The five-year total depends on the prices you pay, how often you replace media, and your local water rate. This page gives you a transparent model and a calculator to run your own numbers.
Which costs less over five years depends on your inputs, not on the filter type alone. A sand system's five-year cost is driven by the equipment price, occasional media cost, and the water discharged during backwashing at your local rate. A cartridge system's is driven by the equipment price and how often you buy replacement cartridges. Change the water rate, the backwash frequency, or the cartridge replacement interval and the winner can flip. What the five-year model includes
The calculator adds up only costs that are genuinely attributable to the filter type and that you can supply from a defensible source:
5-year total = equipment + media over the period + backwash or cleaning water
Media over the period is counted as full sets: an initial set at purchase, then a new set every replacement interval you enter, across the ownership period. In formula terms, sets purchased = round up of (years / interval). Water cost is the gallons you enter multiplied by the period and by your rate per 1,000 gallons. Every number is yours, so the total is reproducible rather than asserted.
An illustrative baseline
To make the model concrete, here is one worked scenario. It is illustrative, not a universal result, and the prices are placeholders, not researched market figures. They are the calculator's starting values, so you can see the method work and then replace every field with current quotes for the exact systems you are comparing.
Mid-size residential setup, five-year ownership, water and sewer at $10 per 1,000 gallons
Sand
- Equipment: $300
- Sand: $25 per fill, replaced every 5 years (one fill in the window)
- Backwash: 250 gallons, 20 times a year (5,000 gallons)
$300 + $25 + $250 water = $575
Cartridge
- Equipment: $260
- Cartridge set: $45, replaced every 2 years (three sets in the window)
- Cleaning water: not counted here
$260 + $135 (three sets) + $0 water = $395
Under these inputs the cartridge is lower, almost entirely because of the illustrative backwash water cost, and it is cheaper both up front and per year, so there is no break-even. Change one assumption and that can flip, as the next sections show. How to fill it with real numbers
Equipment and media prices come from current retailer listings or manufacturer pages for the exact models you are comparing, recorded on the day you check them, not from old articles or temporary sale prices. The sand quantity your filter needs is model-specific: see how much sand a pool filter needs to find the fill amount for your model, then price that amount. Your water and sewer rate is on your utility bill, usually per 1,000 gallons or per unit of volume you can convert. Replacement intervals should reflect your model and your water conditions, not a universal figure, which is why the calculator asks you to set them.

Why energy is not in the baseline
It is tempting to say one filter type "uses less electricity," but filter type alone does not determine pump energy. Total energy is driven by the pump you choose, the flow your pool needs, the system resistance, and your run schedule, not by whether the media is sand or a cartridge. Two identical pools can have very different energy bills with the same filter type. Because a filter-only energy difference cannot be established for a general comparison, energy is left out of the baseline rather than guessed at. Owner time is discussed, not priced
Sand and cartridge systems differ in how you maintain them. Sand filters backwash, which is quick but discharges water. Cartridges are removed and rinsed, which uses little water but takes hands-on time, and cartridges are eventually replaced. Those are real differences in effort, but there is no universal dollar value for a homeowner's time, so the baseline does not quietly convert "more work" into money. If you want to price your time, treat it as a separate line you add yourself.
What changes the result
The same model gives different winners depending on a few inputs. The baseline above puts the sand system at $575 and the cartridge at $395, with the gap coming mostly from the illustrative backwash water cost. Keep every other input the same and drop the water rate to $3 per 1,000 gallons: the sand water cost falls, the sand total drops to $400 against the cartridge's $395, and the gap nearly closes. Nothing about the filters changed. Only an assumption did. That is the point: publish your inputs and the result is defensible; hide them and "sand is cheaper" is just a slogan.
Break-even thinking
When one system costs more up front but less each year, there is a crossover year where it becomes the cheaper choice:
Break-even years = up-front cost difference / annual recurring saving
Take the baseline but set the water rate to $3 per 1,000 gallons, so the sand system totals $400 and the cartridge $395. Both start with equipment plus a first media set, which makes the sand system about $20 higher up front ($300 + $25 = $325 versus $260 + $45 = $305). But its yearly recurring cost is now about $3 lower ($15 of water versus $18 of amortized cartridge replacement, since the two cartridge sets bought after the first come to $90 over five years, about $18 a year). That gives a break-even near $20 / $3, roughly 6.7 years, beyond the five-year window, so the cartridge stays marginally cheaper across five years and the sand system would pull ahead only if you kept it longer. Change the numbers and the crossover moves. The calculator flags a break-even when your inputs produce one.
Costs the model does not include
- Installation and plumbing. Connecting either filter, and any repiping, can differ by site and is not assumed equal.
- Pump cost and energy. The pump is a separate purchase and the larger energy variable, as noted above.
- Pool chemistry. Sanitizer and balancing chemicals are not a filter-type cost.
- Repairs and failures. Valves, laterals, tank or housing issues are not modeled as recurring costs.
- Taxes, promotions, and delivery. Local tax, temporary sales, and shipping vary and are left to your own quotes.
- Homeowner labor. Discussed above, but not priced in the baseline.
Who tends to prefer each
Where water is expensive or discharge is restricted, the backwash cost can push a sand system's five-year total up, which favors a cartridge in the model. Where water is cheap and backwashing is infrequent, a sand system's low media cost can win. Neither is universally cheaper. Do not accept a bare "sand is cheaper" or "cartridge is cheaper" claim. Get current prices for two comparable systems, use your model's real media quantity and your own water rate, pick replacement intervals that fit your water and use, and let the calculator total it. The honest answer is a pair of numbers with your assumptions attached, plus the knowledge of which lever would flip them.
