The SuperFlo High Performance Pump is Pentair's single-speed pump for in-ground pools. Amazon sells it as the "SuperFlo 1HP"; Pentair rates the current model, part 348190, at 1.1 total horsepower. This review is research-based: we did not test the pump. It works from Pentair's 2021 manual, its single-speed brochure and the Amazon listing. No prices, and no star ratings or customer reviews copied across.

Bottom line

A simple, sturdy single-speed pump for in-ground pools, with a TEFC motor Pentair calls NEMA Premium Efficient. Pentair lists it as the only SuperFlo single-speed pump available for order. The catch is the single speed: it cannot slow down to save energy like a variable-speed pump, and California has its own rule for single-speed pumps of this size.

Is the SuperFlo 348190 a good fit for your pool?

Good fit if

  • You have an in-ground pool and are replacing an old SuperFlo
  • You want a simple pump with no programming
  • Your pool and filter suit a pump of about 1 horsepower

Look elsewhere if

  • You are in California: check the state rule for single-speed pumps first
  • You want the energy savings of a variable-speed pump
  • You have an above-ground pool

Why it is called 1 HP but rated 1.1 THP

Pentair's brochure lists the 348190 as a 1.1 THP pump and says it is the only SuperFlo single-speed model available for order; the older 3/4, 1.0 and 1.5 HP SuperFlo pumps in its charts are non-compliant products shown strictly for comparison, while the 348190 meets the DOE minimum efficiency requirements. Pentair says it made its single-speed pumps the first and only ones to use NEMA Premium Efficient motors for pool use. So if you are replacing a "1 HP SuperFlo", this is Pentair's current single-speed SuperFlo (our reading of the brochure). Pentair's brochure plots the old 3/4, 1.0 and 1.5 HP SuperFlo curves next to the new 1.1 THP for comparison; we did not read exact values from the chart.

Single speed in 2026: what the rules mean

Two rules to know before you buy:

  • Federal (DOE): under DOE's 2023 rule, pool pump motors from 0.5 to under 1.15 total horsepower manufactured on or after September 28, 2027 must have variable-speed control; DOE's April 2026 policy separately delays enforcement for such motors manufactured before March 26, 2029. At 1.1 THP (Pentair) the SuperFlo is in that group, so single-speed models this size may become harder to find (our reading).
  • California: California has its own pool pump rules (Title 20). Pentair's 2021 SuperFlo manual states that single-speed pumps and replacement motors of 1 total horsepower or more cannot be sold, offered for sale or installed in a residential pool for filtration use in California. We could not open the California Energy Commission's own pages to confirm how this applies to every pump, so if you are in California, check with your installer or seller before buying a single-speed pump (our advice).

Details: are single-speed pool pumps being phased out?

Energy: single speed versus variable speed

A single-speed pump always runs at full speed. The U.S. Department of Energy explains that power drops much faster than speed, so a variable-speed pump running slowly can filter on a fraction of the electricity. Pentair's own WEF figures show the gap: 3.6 for this pump, 8.4 for its WhisperFlo VST variable-speed pump (higher is more efficient). If you run your pump many hours a day, compare the two before deciding (our advice): how much electricity a variable-speed pool pump uses.

Installation and care from Pentair's manual

  • Only a qualified plumbing professional should install it, according to Pentair.
  • At least 5 ft from the inside wall of the pool (9.8 ft in Canada), 3 ft from a heater outlet, and not more than 10 ft above the water level.
  • Supply voltage must match the motor nameplate; ground and bond the motor, and on a GFCI breaker give it its own circuit unless it runs with a Pentair salt chlorine generator.
  • Check the strainer basket at least once a week: Pentair warns a dirty basket stresses the motor.
  • Before freezing weather: power off, remove the two drain plugs, and cover the motor without wrapping it in plastic. Pentair says freeze damage is not covered under warranty.

The trade-offs

What we like

  • Simple single-speed pump, no programming
  • TEFC motor Pentair calls NEMA Premium Efficient
  • 1.5 in. and 2 in. union fittings for easy replacement
  • Self-priming
  • Clear installation and winter instructions

Worth knowing

  • Single speed: no low-speed energy savings
  • California has its own single-speed rule: check it first
  • Lower WEF (3.6) than variable-speed pumps

Who should buy the SuperFlo 348190?

Buy it if

  • You are replacing an old SuperFlo with the same footprint
  • You want a simple pump and run it only a few hours a day
  • You are outside California, or have confirmed the state rule

Skip it if

  • You are in California and have not checked the state rule
  • You run your pump many hours a day and want lower electricity use

Consider something else if

  • Your pool is large or has a heater or features: a variable-speed pump such as the WhisperFlo VST suits that better

Common questions

Is the Pentair SuperFlo 1 HP or 1.1 HP?

Pentair rates the current SuperFlo High Performance Pump, part 348190, at 1.1 total horsepower. Older SuperFlo pumps were sold as 1 HP.

Is the SuperFlo variable speed?

No. The 348190 is single speed. Pentair's current variable-speed SuperFlo is the SuperFlo VST (the SuperFlo VS is discontinued).

Can I install it in California?

Check first. Pentair's manual states that single-speed pumps of 1 total horsepower or more cannot be sold or installed for residential pool filtration in California; we could not open the California Energy Commission's pages to confirm the details.

Is it self-priming?

Yes, Pentair lists it as self-priming.

What we could not confirm

Honest gaps. We do not state these because we could not confirm them from Pentair's documents.

  • Warranty terms
  • Flow in GPM for your plumbing (see Pentair's performance curves)
  • Noise level in decibels

Our verdict

A dependable, simple single-speed pump and Pentair's current single-speed SuperFlo. Know what you are giving up: no low-speed savings, and California has its own rule for single-speed pumps this size. If your pump runs many hours a day, look at a variable-speed pump first. We do not give pumps a Fit Score; this verdict is based on Pentair's specifications and manual.
