Best above-ground pool pumps

An above-ground pool pump has to plug in safely, sit in the right place and match a smaller filter. These are our picks for a stand-alone pump, and the checks that save you a return trip.

Updated

The short answer

  • Best from a pool brand Hayward PowerFlo LX 1.1 HP on 115 V, Hayward manual; must sit below the water line.
  • Built-in timer Aquastrong 3/4 HP 24-hour timer with 2 to 24 hour run times, 115 V plug; not sold in California.

How we chose

We do not test pumps and we do not score them. We read the manufacturer's manual and product page where they exist, and the Amazon listing where they do not. We never use Amazon customer reviews or star ratings. For above-ground pools we look first at what makes installation safe and simple: a plug-in 115 V motor, clear placement rules and a flow your filter can take.

Plug-in 115 V

Most above-ground setups use a GFCI outlet, not a hard-wired circuit (our view).

Placement

Some pumps must sit below the water line; self-priming ones can sit higher.

Flow your filter can take

Smaller above-ground filters have lower maximum flow ratings.

Winter storage

A drain plug and simple removal make the off-season easier.

Pump only, or a pump and filter combo?

Many above-ground pools use a combined pump and filter unit. If you are replacing both, or setting up a new pool, a combo is often simpler: see our best pool filters for above-ground pools. The pumps on this page suit you if you already have a separate filter, or want to upgrade the pump only (our advice).

Two safety rules for every plug-in pump

Hayward's PowerFlo LX manual says to connect only to a GFCI-protected circuit and not to use an extension cord, and both rules make sense for any plug-in pool pump (our view). Plan an outlet near the pump before you buy. Why voltage and wiring matter: pool pump voltage, 115V vs 230V.

  • Not self-priming: must sit below the water line
  • California: Pentair's manuals state single-speed pumps of 1 THP or more cannot be installed for residential filtration there; check the state rule
  • Short 3 ft cord, no extension cord allowed
  • Single speed
Why it made the list

It is the documented brand option, with clear rules for placement, power and winter storage.

Where it loses

It must sit below the water line, has a short cord, and runs at one speed only.

Pool filter pump for an above-ground pool: combo or separate?

All three picks above are combo units: the pump and the filter come together, sized to each other, which is the simplest way to get a pool filter pump for an above-ground pool. If you already have a filter you like and only the pump has failed, you can replace the pump on its own; our above-ground pool pump picks cover that. Two checks before buying a separate pump (our advice): keep its flow under your filter's maximum flow rating, and check whether it must sit below the water line, as Hayward requires for its PowerFlo LX. Hayward's PowerFlo LX manual says to connect that pump only to a GFCI-protected circuit and not to use an extension cord.

What to weigh before you buy

Below or above the water line

A non-self-priming pump such as the PowerFlo LX must sit below it.

Filter flow rating

Keep the pump's flow under your filter's maximum.

GFCI outlet nearby

No extension cords: plan the outlet before the pump.

Winter

Drain the pump and store it dry before freezing weather.

Common questions

What size pump does an above-ground pool need?

One that turns the pool over in your chosen run time and stays under your filter's maximum flow. See what size pool pump do I need.

Can I use an extension cord for a pool pump?

Hayward's PowerFlo LX manual says not to use an extension cord, and to connect only to a GFCI-protected circuit.

Does an above-ground pump need to be self-priming?

Only if it sits above the water line. Hayward's PowerFlo LX must be installed below the water line; its PowerFlo II is the self-priming version.

Should I buy a pump or a pump and filter combo?

If you are replacing both, a combo is often simpler. See our above-ground filter picks.
