Best inground pool pumps

In-ground pools run their pump for hours every day, so the pump type matters as much as the brand. Here are our picks across variable, dual and single speed, with the rule changes you should know before you choose one.

Updated

The short answer

  • Best overall Pentair WhisperFlo VST Variable speed, ENERGY STAR, full manual; the long-term choice.
  • Simple like-for-like swap Pentair SuperFlo 348190 1.1 THP single speed, Pentair's current single-speed SuperFlo; California: check the state rule.
  • Two speeds with a remote VIVOHOME 2HP dual speed High and low speed, four timer segments, RF remote; no plug included.
  • Two speeds, no extras XtremepowerUS 2HP dual speed 3,450 and 1,720 RPM on 230 V.
  • WhisperFlo-style replacement LINGXIAO 1.5HP Single speed, 115 or 230 V switch, listed as replacing several WhisperFlo models.
  • Dual voltage, single speed Leomru 2HP 115 or 230 V switch, 6,800 GPH; single speed.

How we chose

We do not test pumps and we do not score them. We read the manufacturer's manual and product page where they exist, and the Amazon listing where they do not, and we check them against what the U.S. Department of Energy says about pump speed and the 2023 motor rules. We never use Amazon customer reviews or star ratings. Variable speed comes first because it suits most in-ground pools best; then the simplest like-for-like replacement, then two-speed and single-speed options. The order is not about power.

Pump type first

Variable speed saves the most; two speeds are a middle step; single speed is the simplest but costs the most to run.

The 2025 and 2027 rules

New pool pump motors from 0.5 to 5 THP are moving to variable speed under DOE's rule.

Voltage and wiring

Check 115 or 230 V at your pad and how the pump connects.

Documentation

Brand manuals make installation and troubleshooting much easier.

Read this first: the rules changed

Under DOE's 2023 rule, pool pump motors from 1.15 to 5 total horsepower (THP) manufactured on or after September 29, 2025 must have variable-speed control, and motors from 0.5 to under 1.15 THP manufactured on or after September 28, 2027; DOE's April 2026 policy separately delays enforcement for small-size motors made before March 26, 2029. The rule goes by THP, which many listings do not give, so a pump sold as "2 HP" is not automatically in a given group (our reading). California has its own rules: Pentair's manuals state that single-speed pumps of 1 total horsepower or more cannot be sold or installed there for residential pool filtration; we could not open the California Energy Commission's pages to confirm the details, so check first if you are in California. That is why our first pick is variable-speed. Details: are single-speed pool pumps being phased out?

Pool filter pump for an above-ground pool: combo or separate?

All three picks above are combo units: the pump and the filter come together, sized to each other, which is the simplest way to get a pool filter pump for an above-ground pool. If you already have a filter you like and only the pump has failed, you can replace the pump on its own; our above-ground pool pump picks cover that. Two checks before buying a separate pump (our advice): keep its flow under your filter's maximum flow rating, and check whether it must sit below the water line, as Hayward requires for its PowerFlo LX. Hayward's PowerFlo LX manual says to connect that pump only to a GFCI-protected circuit and not to use an extension cord.

Start with the pump type row: it decides your running costs more than any other line.

What to weigh before you buy

Running hours

The more hours your pump runs, the more a variable-speed pump pays off.

Your filter

Keep the pump's flow under your filter's maximum flow rating.

Existing plumbing

Matching the old pump's footprint and unions makes a swap much easier.

Safe wiring

GFCI protection and bonding are required; leave the wiring to an electrician.

Common questions

What is the best type of inground pool pump?

For most pools, variable speed: DOE says it can reduce pool pump energy use by 50% to 75%, and new motors from 1.15 to 5 THP must be variable-speed since September 29, 2025.

What size pump does an inground pool need?

One that turns your pool over in your chosen time without exceeding the filter's maximum flow. See what size pool pump do I need.

Can I still buy a single-speed inground pump?

Older stock can still be on sale (our reading), but motors from 1.15 to 5 THP manufactured on or after September 29, 2025 must have variable-speed control. California has its own rule for single-speed pumps of 1 THP or more (Pentair's manuals); check it if you are there.

Is a dual-speed pump good enough?

It saves energy if the low speed does the filtering. DOE notes it is harder to fine-tune than a variable-speed pump. See dual-speed pool pumps explained.
