Every pool filter falls into one of three families. Picking the right one is mostly about how much maintenance you want to trade for how much fine filtration.
Cartridge
Cartridge filters trap fine particles and are simple to service: pull the cartridge, rinse it, put it back. They suit smaller and mid-size pools and anyone who wants a low-fuss setup. The trade-off is periodic cartridge replacement.
Sand
Sand filters are the low-touch option. You backwash instead of rinsing, and the sand lasts several seasons. They handle larger volumes well but filter slightly less fine than cartridge or DE.
DE
Diatomaceous earth filters give the finest filtration of the three, at the cost of more involved maintenance and DE handling. They shine when water clarity is the top priority.
