Best variable-speed pool pumps

A variable-speed pump can filter slowly for hours on a fraction of the power and speed up only when a job needs it. These are our current picks, from a fully documented brand pump to two simpler options, and what to check before you buy any of them.

Updated

The short answer

  • Best documented Pentair WhisperFlo VST 2.6 THP, WEF 8.4, ENERGY STAR certified, runs on 115 or 230 V without rewiring.
  • Simple timer, wide range Aquastrong 2HP 1,200 to 4,000 RPM with four timer periods; specs from the listing only.
  • Wide range, rain cover VARMINPOOL 2.5HP 1,200 to 4,000 RPM, four preset speeds; specs from the listing only.

How we chose

We do not test pumps and we do not score them. We read the manufacturer's manual and product page where they exist, and the Amazon listing where they do not, and we check the figures against the pump physics the U.S. Department of Energy explains. We never use Amazon customer reviews or star ratings. A pick here means the specs are clear enough to judge who it suits; where documentation is thin, we say so on the card.

A real low speed

Filtering is where a pump spends most of its hours, so a low minimum speed matters most for energy.

Documentation

A manual with wiring, programming and installation rules is worth a lot when you set it up.

Voltage that fits

Most variable-speed pumps want 230 V (our view); check what you have at the equipment pad.

Flow your filter can take

A big pump at top speed can push more water than a small filter is rated for.

Why variable speed saves so much

The U.S. Department of Energy explains it with the pump affinity law: when you cut the motor speed in half, the flow is cut in half, but the power drops to one-eighth. In DOE's example, a single-speed pump used 12.6 kWh a day to turn over a 25,000-gallon pool, against 2.2 kWh for a variable-speed pump running slowly. Under DOE's 2023 rule, new pool pump motors from 1.15 to 5 total horsepower must have variable-speed control since September 29, 2025. More: how much electricity a variable-speed pool pump uses.

What about the Pentair SuperFlo VS?

Our Pentair SuperFlo VS review covers that pump in detail, but we do not list it as a pick here while its availability is uncertain. If you can still find one, the review tells you what to check.

Pick 1

Pentair WhisperFlo VST (EC-011533)

Pentair

The best-documented pump on this list: Pentair publishes the full manual, the WEF and the ENERGY STAR certification, and it runs on 115 or 230 V without rewiring.

Best for Larger in-ground pools, long pipe runs, a heater or water features, and owners replacing an old WhisperFlo.

Total horsepower2.6 THP
WEF8.4
Speed range450 to 3,450 RPM
Voltage115 to 230 V, no rewiring
Ports2 in.
CertificationENERGY STAR, UL, NSF/ANSI 50

What we like

  • Full Pentair manual with default schedule and wiring
  • Runs on 115 or 230 V without a wiring change
  • Drop-in replacement for WhisperFlo pumps (Pentair)
  • Works with Pentair automation

Worth knowing

  • More pump than a small, simple pool needs
  • Hard-wired on a GFCI circuit: electrician work
  • Warranty terms only via pentair.com/warranty
Why it made the list

It is the only pick with a manufacturer manual, a published WEF and an ENERGY STAR certification, which makes it the safest choice to set up and run well.

Where it loses

For a small pool with just a filter it is more pump than you need, and the wiring is a job for an electrician.

Based on: Pentair's WhisperFlo VS / VST Installation and User's Guide and product page, and the Amazon listing for EC-011533, checked October 2026.

In-ground or above-ground Aquastrong 2HP variable-speed pool pump with digital control panel.
Pick 2

Aquastrong 2HP Variable Speed Pool Pump (PSP200PM)

Aquastrong

A wide 1,200 to 4,000 RPM range with a simple four-period timer, and flow figures roughly in line with a physics check.

Best for Owners with 220 V who want variable-speed savings without automation.

Motor2 HP, variable speed
Speed range1,200 to 4,000 RPM
Flow3,566 to 10,566 GPH (listing)
Voltage220 V, 7.2 A
Timer4 periods per day
Warranty2 years (listing)

What we like

  • Wide speed range
  • Simple four-period timer
  • 1.5 in. and 2 in. adapters
  • Flow figures roughly in line with pump physics (our check)

Worth knowing

  • No manufacturer manual found online
  • 220 V only
  • Top flow exceeds many above-ground filters
Why it made the list

It gives the core variable-speed benefit, a long slow filtering period, with a simple timer, and the listing's flow numbers are roughly in line with pump physics.

Where it loses

Documentation is thin compared to Pentair, there is no ENERGY STAR or WEF rating we could find, and you may need to cap the top speed for a small filter.

Based on: the Amazon listing for PSP200PM (no manufacturer document found), checked October 2026, and our own check against DOE's pump physics.

In-ground or above-ground VARMINPOOL 2.5HP variable-speed pool pump in storm gray with rain cover and control panel.
Pick 3

VARMINPOOL 2.5HP Variable Speed Pool Pump

VARMINPOOL

A 2.5 HP permanent magnet motor with stepless control from 1,200 to 4,000 RPM, four preset speeds and a rain cover, according to the listing.

Best for Larger pools with 220 V where you want a high top speed for cleaning jobs.

Motor2.5 HP (1.8 kW), permanent magnet
Speed range1,200 to 4,000 RPM, 4 presets
Max flow10,567 GPH (listing)
Max head72 ft
Voltage220 V
Weather ratingIPX5, rain cover

What we like

  • Rain cover and 2.5 HP motor (listing)
  • Stepless speed control with four presets
  • Rain cover and IPX5 rating (listing)

Worth knowing

  • Specs from the listing only; no manual found online
  • 220 V only
  • 2.5 in. ports listed: check your plumbing and adapters
Why it made the list

It offers the same wide speed range as the Aquastrong with a 2.5 HP rated motor and a rain cover, for owners who want headroom for cleaning jobs.

Where it loses

We found no manufacturer manual, warranty or efficiency rating, and its top flow is far more than many filters can take, so cap the speed to suit yours.

Based on: the Amazon listing for the VARMINPOOL 2.5HP variable-speed pump (ASIN B0DYJYLQVK), checked October 2026. No manufacturer document found.

Pool filter pump for an above-ground pool: combo or separate?

All three picks above are combo units: the pump and the filter come together, sized to each other, which is the simplest way to get a pool filter pump for an above-ground pool. If you already have a filter you like and only the pump has failed, you can replace the pump on its own; our above-ground pool pump picks cover that. Two checks before buying a separate pump (our advice): keep its flow under your filter's maximum flow rating, and check whether it must sit below the water line, as Hayward requires for its PowerFlo LX. Hayward's PowerFlo LX manual says to connect that pump only to a GFCI-protected circuit and not to use an extension cord.

Compare the picks

These pumps aim at different setups. The deciding rows are usually voltage, documentation and whether your filter can handle the top flow.

What to weigh before you buy

Your filter's maximum flow

Check the filter label and keep the pump's top speed under it.

230 V at the pad

Most variable-speed pumps need it (our view); some, like the WhisperFlo VST, also run on 115 V.

Programming you will use

A long slow filter period plus short fast periods is where the savings come from.

Electrician and GFCI

Pool pump circuits need GFCI protection under the National Electrical Code.

Common questions

Is a variable-speed pool pump worth it?

If your pump runs many hours a day, usually yes: DOE says a variable-speed pump can reduce pool pump energy use by 50% to 75%, because power drops much faster than speed.

What RPM should a variable-speed pump run at?

The lowest speed that keeps the water clear, with short faster periods for cleaning. See how a variable-speed pool pump works.

Do I need 230 volts for a variable-speed pump?

For most, yes (our view). The Pentair WhisperFlo VST also runs on 115 V without rewiring; the Aquastrong and VARMINPOOL listings give 220 V.

Are single-speed pumps still allowed?

Under DOE's 2023 rule, new motors from 1.15 to 5 total horsepower need variable-speed control since September 29, 2025, and from 0.5 to under 1.15 THP from September 28, 2027 (enforcement delayed for motors made before March 26, 2029).
