pH reads fine, but total alkalinity is high: 150, 180 ppm or more. Do you need to do anything?
The short answer: not urgently. TroubleFreePool's view is that high alkalinity "will simply cause the pH to rise faster" and won't harm the pool by itself. If you are tired of adding acid every few days, lower alkalinity with acid plus aeration: acid lowers both numbers, aeration brings pH back up without raising alkalinity.
Part of: Pool pH and Alkalinity: How They Work Together, our overview of every pH and alkalinity fix.
What it means
High alkalinity makes pH drift upward more quickly, so you need acid more often (TroubleFreePool). Combined with high calcium hardness, it can add to scaling (TroubleFreePool). A normal pH today usually means pH has not caught up yet, or you have just added acid (our note).
Do you need to act?
- pH stays in range for a week without acid: no action needed. This is our rule of thumb, not a source's; keep testing pH during that week.
- You add acid every few days: lowering alkalinity will slow that down. TroubleFreePool's 60 to 90 ppm range slows pH rise.
- Scale on tiles or cloudy water: check the whole balance with the LSI calculator.
The acid and aeration method
- Add acid to bring pH down; muriatic acid lowers both pH and alkalinity (TroubleFreePool).
- Aerate to raise pH again: CO2 outgasses faster when the water is aerated, and pH rises (TroubleFreePool). TroubleFreePool says not to use chemicals to raise pH during this procedure.
- Repeat until alkalinity reaches your target.

FAQ
Is alkalinity of 180 ppm bad?
It is above every range we cite (Taylor 80 to 120 ppm, TroubleFreePool 50 to 90 or 60 to 90 ppm, Arm & Hammer 110 to 150 ppm). Expect pH to climb fast; plan the acid and aeration method.
Why is my alkalinity high?
Common reasons are fill water that is high in alkalinity and too much baking soda or alkalinity increaser in the past (our note: test your tap water to check the first).
